I endlessly waffle between whether this or Gold/Silver Sessions is Elder at the height of their powers, but it doesn't really matter in the end. Omens is a really really goddamn good album.

I disliked this album at first mainly due to the cleaner and less echoing vocals. But dude, it is amazing. They kept their same sound, but made it even more atmospheric and mystical. Was able to see them twice this year. Phenomenal both times, and one of my Top five bands of all time. Love these dudes.

A re-purchase due to an accidental deletion of the original promo file on my PC, which in turn has caused me to listen with fresh ears and appreciate some of the finer aspects of this i may have missed when it was first released.

One of the 2020's most eagerly-awaited rock releases... Elder's 5th full length album: "Omens".
“To me, Omens is our most complete work to date: a set of songs that express the breadth of the band's collective influences,” explains singer/guitar player Nick DiSalvo. “After recording The Gold & Silver Sessions EP, it felt like we fully scratched the itch to explore our minimalist side, taking a step back from the proggy song structures and heavy guitar work of our previous records and just letting the music drift along. When beginning to work on Omens, the goal was to integrate these two tendencies in the band - to make a modern day progressive rock record, but also to take time to jam and float when need be. Most importantly, I feel the spirit of adventure in our music is alive and well, and we missed no opportunity to bring in a whole new arsenal of sounds to the record.”
The five song, 54-minute album is a concept album that mimics the lifespan of a civilization, and also reads as a commentary on our own society hell-bent on profitability at the expense of our own lives and environment.
Omens was produced by Peter Deimel (Anna Calvi, The Kills, The Wedding Present) and recorded at Studio Black Box in Noyant-La-Gravoyêre, France. Deimel and DiSalvo mixed the collection.
Elder is Nick DiSalvo (guitar, vocals, keyboards), Jack Donvan (bass), Michael Risberg (guitars, keyboards) and Georg Edert (drums). The New Bedford, Mass. born band have released five full-length studio albums: Elder (2008), Dead Roots Stirring (2011), Lore (2015) and Reflections of a Floating World (2017).
Rolling Stone placed Reflections of a Floating World at #5 on their Best Metal albums of the Year, describing their music as “sheer gatefold-era grandeur”
Kerrang! said the band has earned “a place amongst heavy rock royalty,” and Paste described the quartet’s music as “one of the very best heavy rock attacks on the planet.”
“Elder have long been breaking out of the stoner metal niche and becoming just a great rock band who warrant comparisons to Zeppelin, Deep Purple, Pink Floyd, UFO, and more, and really do justice to that kind of stuff.” – Brooklyn Vegan (Albums We’re Anticipating in 2020)

Cursing the day
Palisades of the shadows
Against the weight of decay
Grey light in bloom
Wasting away
In the embers of power
Not a voice to remain
Echoes of the past
In the ruins tomorrow
Lies the meaning of today
where only memories are hallow
For time to wash away
Gaze upon me
I have seen the end
Suspended in light
An omen to portend
One are we
Ae vigil in the end
Suspended in light
Days of halcyon descend
Reawakened
A temple from another age
A peace to transcend
loss fading away
Navigating
the empty spaces
The solitary purpose
To outshine the heavens in our minds
Thoughts rain down a thousand suns
Flicker on the surface of the own
The principle of reason
Wielded once in service of the all
Detached from the master’s hand
Blind and writhing ever toward the end
Bleeding out
A macerated land
In veneration
Raise a monument to man
Marching onward
Treading on the scars
In procession
Holding onto a moment
A solitary thought
Plain and overwrought in the same
Seizing in focus
A second of the day
Our own duality overcome
A paradigm, a meaning to itself
Shifting out of view
Slipping away into naught
Raining down on me
I can feel the earth
What has come and gone
Vanishing with no return
Eyes face toward the sun
Mounting the empyrean
Everything is all that will remain
Fate is just a word
Striking straight into the nerve
We all cast a shadow of the pain
What is it you want
Consuming every thought
Consuming all you are
Piercing right into the core
A fallen star to deify
Glowing in the morning light of all demise
Bowing softly toward the end
Staring at the sun hanging in air
Wait for it to fall
Seeing with the eyes of an animal
Backed against the wall
Carrying the voiceless in a hope
And a hope within a sound
Burning down to ash to disappear
Without a trace upon the ground
Golden leaf wrapped around the neck, idly turning
Reaching for the sky to touch the sun again
Drunken innocence, somatic senses corroding
Roots that yearn to wander and reclaim
Wander on
Floating through the world we made before it’s gone
Walk along
One last time to say goodbye
Footsteps echo on
In perpetuum
An age of halcyon
Fades into the past

In the last dozen years, Elder has stepped out of the shadows of their peers in the heavy rock underground to emerge a unique voice, delivering album after album of almost unparalleled consistency and creativity. Omens, the band's fifth full-length record, is the newest pillar in the construction of their own musical universe. With it, Elder further embrace experimentation in their brand of progressive psychedelic rock in which atmosphere, melody and structure are created and transformed again and again.
Following 2017's Reflections of a Floating World and the 2019 experimental EP The Gold & Silver Sessions, it was anyone's guess what the band's next full-length might have in store. Having cemented their own sound – a dense yet lucid brand of heavy rock full of unexpected flourishes and progressive jaunts - the latter EP showcased an exact opposite side of Elder, more rooted in sparse krautrock and even jazz-tinged jams. Omens answers this speculation with a contradiction that embodies the spirit of Elder: somehow, there's even more everything.
In five cinematic songs, lush, intricately interwoven melodies grow and dissolve into spaced-out jams. Massive riffs thunder down into a churning sea of psychedelic sounds and unpredictable grooves carry away the listener. Elder paints pictures with their music, and Omens shows the band experimenting with an even more colorful palette – with good reason. After thirteen years, this is the first full-length recorded with a new lineup including guitarist Michael Risberg and new drummer Georg Edert, along with guest performances by Fabio Cuomo on Rhodes piano and synthesizers.
This is music for a vacation from reality – or to lose oneself in another world. And yet Omens is not purely an exercise in escapism, but also reflects the increasingly bleak, confusing and antagonistic times in which it was written. Composed as a concept album spanning the lifespan of a civilization, the album also reads as a commentary on our own society hell-bent on profitability at the expense of our own lives and environment.
Omens was recorded and mixed at Black Box Studios in France with engineer Peter Deimel (Shellac, dEUS, Motorpsycho) and mastered by Carl Saff in Chicago. The result is an album that is rich, warm and dynamic, presenting the many layers of Elder's complex sound clearly and offering new discoveries with every listen.

King Buffalo is so much more than a band, they are the creators of a feeling. This is the expression of a deep understanding what music needs to be engaging. This is how it should sound. reikf
Anyone homesick for the classic sound of ’90s math rock will fall in love with the jagged guitars & tricky tempos on “LLC.” Bandcamp New & Notable Feb 6, 2023
It blows me away how King Buffalo can release so many albums that are all so insanely good. I mean, the only reason we didn’t get three albums in 2021 is because of the delays at the vinyl pressing plants, but I’ll gladly take two albums. When they’re this good, one album is more than a blessing. Kirk Gauthier
